On the evening of 5
th January, 2011 a fire started in the well known Smith & Caughey department store in Queen Street, Auckland. The fire was thought to have been started by an electrical fault but was beneath a sprinkler head which when activated virtually extinguished the fire. This graphically demonstrates that in the event of fire only those sprinklers in the location of a fire activate and how important they can be in minimising damage. Smith & Caughey, one of the country’s oldest department stores has been in business for 130 years and was again open for customers the following day.
