Kidde Demonstrates High-Tech Fire Fighting System

FARMINGTON, Conn., Dec. 20, 2006  The New Jersey Office of Homeland Security will put its innovative Kidde Big Flow firefighting system to the test today during a demonstration at Rivergate Park in West Deptford, N.J.  The high capacity Kidde Big Flow system delivers water or foam in response to flammable liquid incidents and was adopted earlier this year as part of New Jersey’s security and disaster preparedness initiatives.  Kidde Fire Fighting is part of UTC Fire & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).

“Critical infrastructure protection is at the forefront of people’s minds and more flexibility and increased water supply capability are necessary to solve the challenges brought on by rising threat levels,” said Dennis Jackson, vice president of domestic sales for Kidde Fire Fighting.
“The Big Flow system’s mobility, capacity and speed of delivery provides New Jersey’s firefighters with the operational effectiveness they need.”

The system uses a number of specialized Neptune™ pumps designed to deliver large volumes of water in a very short amount of time, and to shoot water or foam more than 430 feet  making it one of the largest full-scale response systems in the world.  The system is also able to draw water from a number of different sources, adding to its flexibility.

Big Flow Systems incorporate a wide range of equipment designed and built by Kidde such as National Foam and Angus Flexible Pipelines. Other components include:

  • Mobile Neptune pumping systems with flows in excess of 5,000 gallons per minute
  • Mobile foam delivery devices with flows up to 8,000 gallons per minute
  • Extra Large Diameter 12” Hose (XLDH)
  • Hose deployment, retrieval and storage equipment
  • Hose manifolds and hardware
  • Foam proportioning and foam transport equipment

The Big Flow system can also be integrated with other standard firefighting components to provide maximum versatility.  Additionally, the Big Flow system can function as a flood water removal system or as an emergency above ground water distribution system to temporarily augment or replace damaged or compromised underground systems.

Expected attendees at the demonstration include: Richard L. Cañas, Director, N.J. Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness; Susan Bass Levin, Commissioner, N.J. Dept. of Community Affairs; Stephen M. Sweeney, State Senator and Gloucester County Freeholder Director; Helene M. Reed, Gloucester County Freeholder Liaison to Gloucester County Dept. of Emergency Response; John Hoffman, President, Gloucester County Fire Chiefs Association; Lawrence Petrillo, Director, State Division of Fire Safety; and area firefighters and emergency management personnel.
